What are Bose Sleepbuds 2?

Bose claims that the new Sleepbuds 2 earphones (cost $250) are tiny and comfortable works with the Bose Sleep app to deliver relaxing sounds to help the user fall asleep along with Bose noise-masking technology which assists users to stay asleep all night.

The American audio manufacturer claims that the truly wireless earbuds designed specifically for sleep with comfortable ear tips that passively block noise, while soothing sounds help you sleep through the night.

The earphones are coupled with the Bose Sleep app which offers a library of 40 sounds, including Bose-engineered noise-masking sounds and relaxation content with the promise of more sounds being added with future software updates.

You can listen to sounds from three main categories:

Noise Masking: Sleep sounds are optimized to work all night with the noise-blocking design of Sleepbuds to cover up noise like snoring, traffic, and conversation.

Naturescapes: Relaxing, tonal environments designed to bring peace to your mind and body to help you fall asleep fast and sleep through the night.

Tranquilities: Soothing sounds from nature and beyond transport you to comforting spaces so sleep comes easily all night long.

Unlike other true wireless earphones where users can stream music all night, Bose claims that Sleepbuds 2 uses low-energy Bluetooth connection to transfer the various sounds from the mobile app to the buds.

Users can also use the phone-free mode which allows them to play songs that are already downloaded on the buds without having to connect to the phone.

Are the Sleepbuds 2 safe?

TV9 Digital spoke to medical experts to find out how safe are these sleep assisting earphones which the user is most likely to keep on throughout the night.

Dr Satyanarayana Mysore, a wellknown somnologist, sees sleep assisting earphones as not scientifically proven, although they may help in noise reduction.

“At best, scientifically we can say that these help in sleep hygiene measures. But it's not going to be an all-out magic pill for sleep.”

Dr Ankur Gupta, an ENT specialist from Noida, said he had treated several patients who had used tight earplugs leading to several ear complications.

So, what were his findings?

· There are several tiny hairs in our ears. By wearing tight earplugs, you might injure your ear hair leading to swelling, puss and eventually an ear infection. Ear infections can cause severe pain.

· Inserting the earplugs deep into the ear can cause the earwax to be pushed further back in the ear canal.

· Earplugs are closer to the eardrums compared to external headphones. Listening to earphones for a long time can cause noise induced hearing loss. Prolonged use of earphones with high noise can even lead to permanent loss of hearing
